Blaise found Crabbe and Goyle waiting for him after he finished descending
the stairs with Slughorn. They were relieved that he had not been
expelled and blaimed McGonagall rather than him for the loss of Slytherin's
points. Blaise knew not everyone else would be so generous, but surely
Pansy and Tracey would forgive him when they learned he was doing as Draco
asked.
He had a free period now, and it took some effort but he convinced Crabbe and
Goyle to go on to their first class. They insisted on escorting him to
the common room however. He found Nott there and motioned for him to
follow up to the dormitory. Nott closed the door to seventh year boys
dorm behind them.
"Here," Blaise said, handing him the badge. "You're
prefect now."
Nott took the badge and held it victoriously over his head.
"Yes! I'm third choice!"
Blaise shrugged and sat down on the bed. "I expected you to get it
to start with."
"Oh well," Nott said, sitting down on the end of his own bed.
"Least I got it before Crabbe and Goyle. Maybe everyone can have a
turn before the year's out...that was a joke, Zabini. It's traditional to
laugh or at least fake a smile."
Blaise made the side of his mouth twitch.
"Don't strain yourself," Nott said. "At least you didn't
get kicked out. You didn't, did you?" Blaise shook his
head. "Good, it's weird enough with Malfoy gone. Makes
everything a bit too quiet, you know?"
"Yeah," Blaise said dryly.
Nott tossed the badge up in the air and caught it again. "So...uh,
you and Chang. Was that picture really from this year?"
"Yesterday."
"Yesterday?" Nott said. "That was fast. Was that the
first time you kissed her or have you been keeping secrets?"
"Only time."
"Rotten luck," Nott said. "That article made it sound more
involved. Actually that article seemed a bit shady.
Moonstone's been asking people about you all week. And he just happened
to walk by with a camera at the right moment? Sounds more like he was
stalking."
"Pretty much," Blaise said, already beyond bored with the topic of
Luca, but Nott looked intrigued. So Blaise told him in bits and pieces
about his run ins with Luca. Nott seemed to take it all more seriously
than he did.
"I thought Malcolm was acting a bit funny," Nott said.
"I'm gonna have a talk with him."
"Whatever," Blaise said. "I'm tired. Think I might
skive Arthimancy and catch up on some sleep."
Nott frowned and shook his head. "Oh, no, I'll walk you to
Arithmancy. You're in enough trouble without skiving off classes."
"As you like," Blaise said, laying back on his bed. Between
Crabbe, Goyle, and Nott he didn't have much time to himself that day or the
next. They only left him alone during his detention with Slughorn.
Blaise was a bit baffled by their attention, particularly Nott's, but he knew
it would be worse without them and did not complain.
