Hermione woke up early at
around seven. She got dressed and went down to the common room and waited. Very
few people were up this early, except for the ones who wanted to get thier
weekend homework done so they could have a free weekend. Hermione lit the fireplace
and layed on the couch closest to the fire, and watched each spark fly out of
the fire onto the brick frame of the fireplace. One of them has to get up
sooner or later she thought to herself, guessing that the first one up
would be Harry, but hoping it would be Ron.
Ginny sauntered down the stairs looking a bit
disheveled and rubbing sleep from her eyes when she noticed Hermione sitting on
a couch in the middle of the common room. "Hermione," she said,
looking at her curiously, "What are you doing up so early?" She might
have asked herself the same question, really.
Hermione was really wondering why Ginny
was up so early. "I’m waiting for
Harry and Ron to get up. Why are you up?"
"Ah, gotcha," Ginny replied, looking around
the room to see if anyone else was up, which they weren't. "No idea.
Couldn't sleep."
"Same here…I didn’t plan this. I just woke
up, and couldn’t fall back asleep so I came down here to see if anyone was
awake. But I had no luck until you got up." Hermione yawned. "Yeah, I’m
still tired."
Ron walked down the stairs, stretching and
yawning. Hearing quiet voices, Ron walked over to the couch. He wasn't so much surprised
to see Hermione up, but Ginny was usually in bed until someone made her get up
on the weekends. "Morning," Ron yawned.
"Morning." Hermione said as she smiled
"One down, one to go," she muttered to herself. "I was planning on spending the day with
you and Harry. Are you guys busy?"
Promise, who had gotten up an hour earlier to
care for her horse and shower, stumbled ungracefully into the common room
through the portrait hole. She glared at her feet and cursed softly. She held a
book in her right hand and was swatting irritably at Charm with the other,
seemingly oblivious to the others in the room.
Not that anyone could probably blame her. Charm was flitting about her head
teasing her, batting her in the face with her paws and sneezing. For some
reason the little cat had woken up incredibly hyperactive that morning and was
becoming a constant source of torture for her companion.
Promise finally made it to an armchair and plunked herself unceremoniously down
into it. She was just about to open her book when Charm landed a cuff on her
nose. She looked up and pointed at the cat irritably, "I WILL kill you,"
she said but stopped as her eyes drifted over the other three students in the
room. She jumped, completely unaccustomed to other students being up this
early.
She suddenly felt a little awkward and shifted in her chair. She didn't know
any of these people well, though they had seemed nice enough from a distance.
"Uhh--" she said dumbly, "If I'm interrupting...." She
trailed off, her tone of voice indicating she'd be happy to vacate her seat if
they needed to talk privately.
"Not interrupting a thing," Ginny told
her, shaking her head, "Just a couple of girls who've lost their minds and
woken up early."
"Definitely not interrupting," Hermione
said to the oddly familiar girl. She had an idea of who she was, but couldn’t
exactly put her finger on her name "Promise right?" Hermione said,
completely forgetting that she had met her before.
Promise smiled at Ginny in as friendly of a
manner as the early hour would permit. Thankfully Charm had become distracted
with a chunk of paper on a nearby table and stopped pestering her long enough
for that smile to be genuine. She
looked over at Hermione when she heard her name spoken and tried desperately to
remember her name. Ginny was easy,
she'd actually met her on more than one occasion. "Yes, ma'am. And yours
is Hermione right?" She craned her neck to look at Ron, "And...Roy?
RON! Right I nearly plowed you down at the wedding."
She cocked her head. "Good morning
to all of you...though there must be something in the air, because I don't
think I've ever caught any of you out of bed at this ungodly hour."
"Well…I don't know why Ron is up so early,"
Hermione said as she smiled at Ron. She looked back to Promise. "But Ginny
and I couldn't sleep. "
Promise frowned, that was a sign of bad luck.
She shook her head and moved past it, however. She didn't enjoy letting
superstitions control her life, if the bad luck was going to come, let it come.
"That kind of sucks. Oh well, at
least you can always grab an early breakfast now, right?"
Harry staggered down the stairs, rubbing his
eyes. As he came down, he heard the voices of his friends. His body still thick
with sleep, he sauntered to the couch. "Good morning," he yawned.
Unceremoniously, he threw himself upon the edge of the couth.
Ginny saw Harry enter the common room and looked
nervously at him, not saying a word but smiling vaguely.
"Good morning, Harry," Hermione said,
fully awake now. "Sleep good?"
Promise frowned slightly more. She couldn't
shake her bad opinion of Harry Potter, no matter how much she scolded herself
for being so judgmental. She didn't like being treated the way he treated her,
though he did apologize, she had to give him that. So at the very least in an effort to be a better person she smiled
at him and also said, "good morning."
Harry blinked at Promise's changes in facial
expressions, and then, closing his eyes, he prepared to answer Hermione's
question. He breathed in deeply.
"No, not really. I had a hard time falling asleep last night. Don't know
why."
"Well, I was thinking that today Ron, you,
and I should spend the day together talking," Hermione said not
making eye contact with anyone in the room. Without waiting for an answer she
said, "Go upstairs and get dressed and we’ll go to breakfast and the rest
of the day.. all ours."
As Harry walked toward the dorm stairs, he
noticed the nervous smile on Ginny's face.
"What's wrong?" He said in a soothing, quiet tone.
Ginny tried to keep the nervousness out of her
tone as she looked up at him and replied, "Nothing, nothing, I'm feeling
fine."
Harry paused for a moment. "Okay," he
said resignedly, and continued up to the boy's dormitory to change. He made a
mental note to spend some time with her soon, and see what was troubling her.
He reached the dorm, quickly changed into his robes, and reappeared at the
bottom of the stairs.
"Okay, I'm set. Breakfast?"
"Yes, breakfast," Hermione said
replying to Harry, but with her eyes set on Ginny. Hermione stood up and stretched,
and then headed out the portrait hole.
