As Lacy and her uncle headed back home
from the store, Lacy couldn't help but notice how unusually silent he had been
all day. Now that they were walking home together, completely alone, it was
even more apparent. He was walking sullenly, his hands stuffed in his pockets,
his eyes on the pavement in front of him.
"Something wrong?" Lacy asked, rather nonchalantly.
"Actually. There is." Cecil's tone was stern and uncomfortable.
"I ran into Mr. Hathaway on my way into Greater Hangelton today. He lives
a few houses down from us..."
"Yeah..." said Lacy, confusion in her voice.
"Well he told me he saw some man going into the house last week when I was
out. Said he looked like he was up to no good, and that you let him in."
Cecil's voice grew skeptical. "...said he was dressed all in black and
wearing some sort of cape too."
Lacy wanted to crawl into the nearest sewer drain. Someone must have seen
Severus coming into her house. Now it was probably all over town. Her uncle's
next sentence confirmed it.
"I won't have you being the talk of the town! What exactly were you
doing?"
They had reached the house finally. Thank goodness! It was bad enough the whole
town was probably whispering about her. She didn't want them to be gabbing
about how her uncle chewed her out in the middle of the street.
Once they were inside, Lacy took a breath. "I was only trying to be nice.
That was Drake's uncle. I invited Drake's whole family over for dinner. How was
I supposed to know that his uncle was the only one who didn't already have
plans?" Lacy could feel her cheeks flushing.
"We had lasagna, talked, and then he left." She was proud of herself. That had sounded
very calm. And what was she worried about anyway? That really was all that had
happened. She prayed silently that her uncle wouldn't ask about the 'cape.'
"Very well then..." Cecil said, still eying her suspiciously.
"I'm not so sure I want you hanging around the Riddle house. That place
has bad history. Goodnight." and with that he turned around and stalked
off into his room.
