Draco knocked wearily at
Snape's door.
Severus had his hand on the chamber door when a
couple of thuds were heard... and felt.
He raised his eyebrows, and cautiously opened the door. "Mr. Malfoy?"
"I'm afraid I've been a bit of a stranger
the past few days. But we have a bit to catch up on. If I may?" he
indicated that he wanted to come in.
Severus moved aside, "If you must."
Severus quickly rearranged his features to something more neutral, and shut the
chamber door behind Draco.
It's not as if Severus was headed anywhere important, but he didn't want to put
off teatime until tomorrow. "Tea?"
"No thanks," Draco said. The odd aura
of calm he had acquired was wrapped about him like a shroud. "How private
can we make this chat?"
Severus's eyebrow quirked at that.
"Very," he instantly whipped out his wand and concealed the room in
silencing charm. "Does that suffice?"
Draco nodded and took a seat. "I suppose
first off I ought to tell you about Franklin's wireless," Draco began and
then plunged into an explanation of the device. The monitoring of which had
taken up much of his time the past few days, though none of Neville's
conversation would have been interesting to anyone other than him...most of
Neville's conversations weren't even interesting to him.
Severus listened and occasionally nodded his
head in either understanding or approval. His back was turned to the boy, and
he was preparing himself a cup of tea, but was sure the boy could read him well
enough to know that he was indeed paying attention.
His tea was ready just as Draco had finished. "Has Franklin begun to pick
up the voices of the students yet... it might be wise to throw him off occasionally."
Draco snorted. "Franklin wouldn't notice if
they did say something important. But I don't want to risk getting
caught giving the wrong name. Besides, I have a few things at Hogwarts that I
want monitored myself, and he might catch something useful." Draco
proceeded to tell Snape about all the drama between Blaise and Luca...skirting
Ginny's importance in the mess, and conveniently leaving out his appeal to Cho
for the time being.
Severus nodded. The boy obviously knew what he
was doing.
There was silence.
"Anything else?"
Draco smirked. "Had another little meeting
with the Dark Lord," he said, and went into a pretty thorough description
of it. "He indicated that he wants me to come by more often...which works
out for us."
"Yes," Severus thought for a moment,
"The Dark Lord has always been a sadistic fellow Draco, it is quite...
shocking that he intends for you to kill your own father, in front of an
audience no less."
Draco shrugged. "I expected worse
actually...not that that isn't bad. But it's conditional. Only if father fails
to improve, and you can help him there. And set at some unnamed distant point
in the future, gives me time to plan...no I was expecting much worse. I think
he took my relief as anticipation though...which works as well. I mean it's not
much of a test of loyalty if he thinks I'd like to do it."
"Indeed," Snape drawled.
"There's something else, but I wanted to
ask you something first," Draco said and leaned forward in his chair.
"Why did you go to Lacy's dinner? Do you really trust me so little that
you needed to question her about me?" He had turned it over and over in
his head and that was the only explanation her could find for Snape's going.
Severus was quite taken back; he had almost
forgotten that Draco had known he'd gone to dinner with the girl. "Someone
had to put the girl in her place Draco... I'm just the man to scare a girl...
witless," Severus smirked as he spoke that last word. His memories
wandered back to that special evening, she truly seemed enamored with him.
Draco rolled his eyes. "Oh yes, she seemed
terrified."
"You've talked to the girl?" he asked
suddenly, very curious.
"Yeah," Draco said. "I tried one
last threat. Honestly, if she can't stay away after that, father would be doing
us a favor to off her. I guess we could forge a note saying that she'd run
away." He wasn't particularly thrilled at the prospect. He hoped good
sense won over with Lacy at last, but he was tired. He had done all he could.
"I'll have another chat with the girl,
obviously our... talk wasn't convincing enough for her," he said half
heartedly, not looking at Draco, but re-visiting the memories of that evening.
"You will do no such thing," Draco
snapped, giving Snape a disapproving scowl. "Listen to me for once,
attention of any kind is only going to encourage her."
Severus's attention refocused on Draco. Angry,
Severus snapped, "Do not forget who you're speaking with boy." He
scowled back at Draco, suddenly wishing he could take house points... although
from Slytherin may have been a stretch. "The insufferable twit will
return... and I shall deal with her."
"If she returns," Draco
clarified. "Don't go looking for her." He gave Snape a skeptical look
then shook it off. "Whatever. We have more important things to discuss
than Lacy. I think I'm ready to approach the Order directly."
"Yes," Severus said, calming now that
Draco had changed the topic.
Draco rubbed the back of his neck. "I have
some ideas, but I haven't forgotten that I work for you. What do you want me to
tell them or not tell them for that matter?"
"Tell them whatever you wish boy, just make
sure they accept you." Severus rubbed his temples. This would be
the hardest part of this year. "What are your plans?"
Draco nodded. "We drank the potion I made
for Aunt Bella. I think the Order is using Grimmauld place for something, the
house will recognize me now, so I'm hoping to find someone through it."
"Clever," Severus said, approvingly.
"I wouldn't waste your breath attempting to put in a good word for me...
not after June."
"Yes," Draco said slowly. "That
would defy the point wouldn't it?"
"Yes."
Draco bit back a sigh. He had been hoping for
more, but he shouldn't have expected it.
"When you do contact someone from the Order,
they will not trust you. You should bring Trelawny with you, or at least tell
them you can," Snape drawled.
Draco blinked in surprise. "The Dark Lord
would be willing to turn Trelawny back over?"
"No," Severus replied bluntly.
"So I suppose the latter. You'll have to arrange a way to return her with
the Order," he sighed, and poured himself another cup of tea. "We
would also have to inform Voldemort of you being a double agent..."
"So you haven't discussed it with
him?" Draco asked.
"I do believe Voldemort’s last
interrogation did not have me in the appropriate kind of position for that
discussion," he said sourly. "It might be best if you enquire. He
noticed your strong Occlumency... work with that."
He noticed? Draco decided he
needed to be more careful, then he remembered he had already decided that.
"I'll see what I can do," Draco said. "That may take a little
while though. I think I have some other cards I can play to gain...if not their
trust, their tolerance in the meanwhile."
"Yes, it will be a dangerous path Draco...
but it is one I'm glad you've chosen," he said approvingly. "If
you'll excuse me though, I really must attend to the Strengthening Solution I
have brewing."
