Hermione started on her
homework for a little while before it was time to leave to meet with Luca. She
figured if she got some done, she`d have more time to focus on his homework
with him. She was almost done writing her first page when she looked at the clock
. Time to meet with Luca. She packed up her books in her bag, and set off to
the Library. She’d obviously arrived early because Luca wasn’t there yet. So
she decided to start more on her homework.
Luca rushed into the library, staring at his pocket
watch, gulping. He felt like the white rabbit from that story his mother had
read to him as a child.
"I vill be late... she vill think of me as a lazy type!"
He looked around, making it just in time, seeing Hermione already there. He
gulped and pulled out a chair, sitting down and setting down his parchment and
books.
"I am sorry for being a minute late or so, I still have troubles with all
of the staircases, how they move!"
He panted, catching his breath. He opened his Arithmancy books and began
to work on it, soon loosening his tie, that he had decided was better used as a
armband around the left bicep, wiping his brow with it and setting it by him.
He still made a point of sticking out like a sore thumb, using the clothing
given to him and altering the uniform to his more bohemian tastes. "How did the night fare you, Ms.
Grrranger?"
"That’s alright Luca, I understand those
staircases are so much trouble. I was just doing my homework and such. "
Hermione looked at Luca’s book "Arithmacy? My favorite!"
Luca breathed a sigh of relief as he turned the
book around and showed her his, to the point of completion, only slightly
incorrect figures.
"We use a different system, you see, I was raised with not much use for
Arithmancy, and it being much differently done... this is like learning to walk
again."
He smiled up, keeping notes in his native system referring to them as he buried
his nose in the book. He grunted, a bit exaggerated as he continued to work on
the figures, looking to Hermione with a nervous look.
"This seems so impossible to me, but I enjoy the challenge. This and the
History of Magic. Also the Ancient Runes... such a challenge!"
"I’m sure with a bit of practice you’ll get
it down in no time! " Hermione smiled "I always love challenging
myself, this year so far.. well considering its only been two days.. is pretty
easy for me which is good because we are maki-" Hermione stopped herself
before she spoke about anything other than homework "Because then I don’t
have to take as much time on my homework," she saved it. "I have
about 40 minutes to study with you and then I must leave because I have to
visit Ginny in the Hospital Wing and I am supposed to be meeting with Harry
later on. I really shouldn’t have made
these many plans huh?"
****************
Luca blushed a bit. Hermione had actually
explained things in terms he grasped well, taking down notes quickly.
"This is amazing, you should be teacher! You are friends with Professor
Chang, yes, you be teacher too next year?"
He smiled as he finished his Arithmancy and pulled out the Ancient Runes. He
smiled gently and looked at Hermione, being curious about something.
"Ms. Weasley was injured I have hear around in the hallways, what can you
tell me..? Some have accused me, saying
it was a dark haired fourth year who dresses oddly. Folks are quick to accuse a
Gypsy.." Luca nearly spit out that last phrase, grumping and turning back
to his paperwork.
"Did you enjoy my music last night? I worry I am out of practice."
"I’m not sure if I should be a teacher… but
I’ll definitely think about it. It wasn’t really anyone’s fault that Ginny got
hurt..,she’s a prefect you know and she confiscated some stuff and when she was
on her way to take some of it to Professor McGonagall and something in her bag
exploded and oh man the room was a mess.. but she has burns on her arm. She’ll
be okay…just some scars . Maybe not even that…Madame Pomfrey is very good with
scars. I enjoyed your music very much last night. It relieved a lot of stress
from me. People have been blaming you? Well, umm.. has Ginny confiscated
anything from you?" Hermione asked with a great amount of curiosity
"Oh heavens no! It is just when things go
bad, it is almost tradition to blame the Romani. "Get the Gypsies."
It is the one thing I see common among both the Muggles and wizards. Someone
trips and I'm in the room, I must have given evil eye, something goes missing,
the Gypsy stole it. We are always on the run it seems, simply to keep on
everyone's good side, we stay too long and we become scapegoat. One reason I am
nervous for being here. Did you know my first year, I had student say it was because
of my presence in Hogwarts that your Voldemort came back. It is shameful."
He frowned a bit and looked sorrowful. It was apparent that being on the move
was something that was a part of him, and that a stationary life, even a school
life, troubled him. It scared him to be in one place long enough to become the
butt of jokes, the scapegoat and the unwanted element. It was why he had been
so silent all these years.
He squirmed in his seat a bit, noting the time.
"It seems you must be off to visit your friends, I thank you for your
assistance. I vill find way to pay you back. Perhaps I shall have family craft
you charm, no?"
Luca stood, gave that sly grin of his, a flourishing bow and helped Hermione
get her books together.
"No need to pay me back, " Hermione
said. "I had fun studying with you
and I got all of my work done so it helped me enough. We’ll have to do this
again. See you around Luca!" She
smiled as she picked up her books with Luca’s help and walked to the Gryffindor
Tower to drop them off before she visited Ginny.
