Snape appeared in the dinning area of the house and waited for Draco and Lucius to appear.
Soon enough Lucius felt the familiar dining room appear around them and he let out a breath, both from the exhilaration of the encounter and in relief that Draco was not currently on a train headed for Azkaban. However, any relief which he felt did not stop him from grasping Draco's collar before he could escape from the room and pushing him into one of the tall dining room chairs. Trying to collect his thoughts, he went over the events of the morning in his head and looked to Snape who he assumed was going through a similar process.
"Did Bella send you to collect these bloody weeds?" Lucius blurted out. He snatched the leaves from his son and slammed them down onto the dining table beside him.
Severus went up behind the boy and placed his hands on the back of his chair. He saw Draco wearily glance at him before turning his weary eyes back towards his father.
Draco looked at the leaves anxiously, hoping his father hadn't damaged them. It would be so easy to blame this all on Bellatrix, but he was not in the mood.
"I told Aunt Bella, I'd get them," he said, feeling extremely boxed in. "She didn't send me." Draco said then, Severus bent over the chair and whispered into Draco's ear
"Are you sure you want to cover your Aunt on this one boy." he drawled. He stood up, keeping his hands still on the back of Draco's chair. He knew Lucius had probably heard him whispering, but didn't think he'd mind.
Lucius almost snarled, fully agreeing with Snape and
appreciating his support on the matter. Now that he was safe, how could he be
anything but furious at his son for being so ridiculously stupid.
"So it was your own idiocy which sent you out there alone and without anyone to come for you if you were captured?"
"Pretty much," Draco said.
"Are you aware of the danger you put yourself and more importantly us in?" Severus said in a louder than normal tone. It was like he seemed to melt out of the room when he wasn't talking because he saw Draco jump a bit when he spoke so sharply.
This time Lucius did snarl, whirling away from his son and taking several steps away. His hand automatically clutched his wand and he stood for a moment trying to calm himself down. Although calming down had never been a particular forte on his part.
"I wasn't expecting you to come after me. I wasn't trying to confront anyone. It was midnight, I thought the Longbottoms would be tucked away all safe in their beds, I could grab the leaves and go." Draco paused, rubbed his sore neck, stiff from the previous night. "Look, I learned my lesson. Next time, I'll take back up and wait ‘til 3a.m."
"Next time?" Lucius roared, almost certainly rousing anyone in the house to the so called discussion which was going on in the dining room. He whirled on his son. "Next time? And what are you going to do, 'next time' without a bloody wand?" He felt his lip curl in a sneer.
"Well, I wasn't planning on heading back tonight," Draco said, trying not to sound sarcastic or irritated and mostly succeeding. "Besides we've got Ollivander locked up in the dungeon. Worse comes worse, he can make me a new one."
Lucius could have hit his son for taking such a bloody flippant attitude towards something so serious.
"You really think it would be that easy to get it back, don't you?"
"What do I use my wand for anymore these days? Rate I'm going, I'll hardly miss it." Draco was a bit surprised at himself for speaking this way to his father, but he had come of age while Lucius was in prison.
And, he could hardly explain that he was a bit disappointed at being rescued so quickly. That part barely made sense to him and certainly would not make sense to either Snape or his father.
"Look, I was stupid. I did something stupid...okay? I
don't know what was wrong with me. I think Fenrir confunded me or something, my
head felt funny. But I'm not blaming Aunt Bella," this part he directed at
Snape, and rose out of the chair where Lucius had pushed him. "For my
mess. I'm an adult and I'll take responsibility."
For a moment as the other two stared back at him, Draco had a deep desire to crawl under the table and make himself very small. But he bit his tongue, felt his neck muscles tighten, and returned their gaze.
Snapes brows furrowed as he stared at Draco in disbelief. Sure the kid was dumb, but it was Bellatrix's fault for getting all of them into this mess. Then again, maybe he just wanted Bellatrix to get punished for once, although he'd be doing that anyways next time he saw her. He was getting off topic in his brain. A scowl spread across his face as he waited for Lucius to say something. Snape sure wasn't going to interfere in this father-son battle.
Surprisingly, not all of Lucius wanted to rip his son apart
for this comment and part of him, most of him, actually, wanted to simply smile
at Draco, pat him on the back and tell him how glad he was that he was finally
beginning to show what he was made of. Of course, this was entirely overwhelmed
by the fact that Lucius was still overwrought by the events of the evening and
pushed these more paternal instincts far to the back of his mind.
"Alright then. You're an adult and yes, you were far beyond stupid. But because you are an adult, perhaps you shouldn't expect any further help from Snape or myself. I hope that you enjoy preparing and cleaning up after potions without a wand because neither of us will be helping to retrieve it." His hand still wrapped tightly around his wand, Lucius quickly left the room.
Draco watched his father go, grateful that he seemed to have not pushed him too far, before he breathed a sigh of relief however he looked at Snape.
Snape glared at Draco a moment and slowly walked over to him. He leant over and hissed into his ear
"I don't know why you're protecting Bellatrix, but what you did was indeed stupid. Have a good sleep Malfoy." And Severus stalked off to his chambers.
