Hermione had just finished studying with
Luca. She really didn’t want to carry her books, so she made a stop to
Gryffindor Tower to put her bag away. She grabbed a jacket and headed off to
the Hospital Wing.
It was quite chilly out that night so Hermione wanted to get there and back as
fast as possible. When she finally approached the Hospital Wing she opened the
door quietly, waved to Madame Pomfrey who was tending to another student,
walked over to Ginny`s bed, and said "Hey Weasley" smiling as she
pulled up a chair and sat next to her bed.
Ginny smiled and looked up at Hermione as she
pulled up a chair and sat next to her bed, "Hey, Hermione, fancy seeing
you here."
"Well, I told you I’d be here later.."
Hermione looked at her feet "I just got done studying with Luca…He’s a
very nice boy for a Slytherin. He has a lot of heart. Did you know that people
are blaming him for your accident? Weird huh considering… well... the person
you confiscated the stuff from was a Gryffindor."
"Luca? I don't really know anything about
him. I'm glad he's nice. I wasn't aware that it was possible to be a nice
Slytherin," she added, thinking back to another certain Slytherin who was
certainly being nice to her. "How
could they blame him when I took it from a Gryffindor? That doesn't make any
sense."
I don’t know... He says that everyone in his
house points fingers at him for everything that happens. He’s a gypsy. He says that’s why people point fingers at
him."
"Well, that's ridiculous," Ginny
replied crossing her arms over her chest, "Some Gryffindor with dark hair
and red trainers, though I think they are in the same year."
"Yeah maybe…" Hermione replied clearly
with something else on her mind "After I’m finished visiting with you, I’m
going to the common room to meet Harry to talk. Do you know when you are
getting out of here?"
"I think she planned on letting me out
later today, or tomorrow morning, depending on how my arm was doing. What are
you talking to Harry about?" she asked, noticing how distracted Hermione
seemed.
"That’s good. Sooner the better. Just as
long as your arm’s alright." Hermione was nervous about telling Ginny,
maybe Harry didn’t want her to? She was
going to change the subject but she knew Ginny would hammer it out of her. "The note that you received to give to
him. He told me what it said." Hermione had a very distant look to her
face almost as if she was thinking hard and staring off into space at the same time.
"Something about Voldemort being in Little Whinging," Hermione looked to the ground. "I’m guessing we might have to leave
soon. But I’m going tonight to talk to Harry about what we plan to do."
"Yeah, well, it's getting better, at least.
I'm not keen on staying for too much longer," she replied, looking
thoughtfully at Hermione, "That note? That's what it said? Voldemort's
in...wait, where the hell is Little Whinging?"
"Did I say little Whinging? I meant Little
Hangleton…My mind is racing right now, sorry. "
"Little Hangleton... where is that?" Ginny
asked, thinking.
"I have no idea…but I guess I’ll find out
right?" Hermione said with her eyes on the other boy that was in the
Hospital Wing sleeping. She was envious of him. Not the fact that he was in the
Hospital Wing, but the fact that he only had normal things to worry about. Not
every single 17 year old was worrying about defeating Voldemort. Only three so
far. She wanted a life where she didn’t have to worry about Dark forces and her
friends getting hurt -- possibly killed by Death Eaters. She felt horrible for
thinking this, because she loved Harry and she loved Ron. But she was sure they
didn’t want this life either at times. Harry -- constantly having to deal with
his family passing away, and the closest thing to family he had was his
friends. Because his real family didn’t care about him as much as his friends
did. Ron -- having such a large family, one of them is bound to be-- and has
been hurt by Voldemort at some point. She was hoping, that soon all of this
would be over and she could lead a normal life. Ginny probably felt awkward by
the silence so Hermione decided to spill the truth to her. "I’m scared
Ginny. " she blurted out "Not like I haven’t helped Harry before,
but... to this extent I haven’t. I’m going to go for sure because i would never
dream of letting Harry go alone, but... he’s-Voldemorts- more powerful now. I’m
really scared."
Ginny swallowed, looking at Hermione with
frightened and pitying eyes, "We're all scared," Ginny started,
reminded again of her fears that Draco would be discovered to be helping Harry,
"But we're all in this together. I guess you, Ron and Harry are in more
danger than most, though. I'm scared, too. Scared for Harry, for you, for my
family, for me... I don't know."
"I hate to say it, but I don’t really want
to be known as 'Hermione Granger the one who helped Harry Potter defeat
Voldemort'. I love Harry to death. I’d
do anything for him. But I realize, we aren’t just doing this for Harry. We’re
doing it for all witches and wizards and everything else that fits in that
category. If we don’t succeed, I couldn’t imagine what would happen. If he
defeats us, he knows he can defeat anyone. I guess the pressure is just getting
to me, and heck, we haven’t even made the damn plans yet." Hermione could
feel her face getting hot, and tears welling up in her eyes "This is what
it all comes down to I guess," she said as she wiped the first tear coming
down her cheek. "A test of what we know pretty much. If we do this.."
she laughed. "...we shouldn’t have to take the O.W.L.’s right? haha. I
mean, it means we know just about everything we need to know "
The words Ginny said before We are all in this together kept ringing in
her head over and over again, and she finally knew what she was going to talk
to Harry about.
Ginny looked at Hermione, biting her lip and
feeling more concerned now even than before. They would be fighting fully grown
witches and wizards, the most powerful one of all time, even, armed only with
what they'd learned in 6 years. It would be tough, it would be terrifying, and
there was no guarantee that they'd survive. "You're right. This is so much
bigger than us. I mean, if it's a success, everyone feels it. If it's a failure, then.... well, there's no
one better suited to the job. It's going to be just... just nerve and skill,
and that's all you'll have in the end. But if anyone can do it, it's you
guys." Hermione's eyes were full of unwept tears, and Ginny couldn't look
at her without feeling tears start in the corners of her own.
Hermione saw the tears in Ginny’s eyes. Didn’t help much, just made hers come out
faster. "The only thing I can do right now is love my life. Love my
friends, and make plans. I must have a positive attitude towards this.
Confidence is the key right? Nerve and Skill… that’s what’s got us through this
for 6 years. That’s what made everyone friends. That’s what’s going to keep us
happy. That’s what’s going to keep us alive." She shook her head and swallowed hard at the thought of this. "Everything will be alright."
But what if everything isn't all right? Came the nagging doubt in Ginny's mind. Things weren't all right.
People were dying. People were in
danger. People were suffering, and
there was little they could do about it until they had found whatever they were
looking for and Voldemort was out of power. They had to be able to beat him. They just had to. "So that's it then,
you think?" Ginny asked, not daring to look up at Hermione, "Just
live and love and do what you can?"
"For now yes. Just hope for the best. We’re
doing the best we can right now. We can’t save the world just yet." she
said as she wiped the tears that had collected on her nose, and took the chair
back to it’s place. "I have to go talk with Harry. See you soon?" she
said as she gave Ginny the closest thing to a hug she could. "Don’t worry
too much. We haven’t made any plans just yet"
"Alright, Hermione," Ginny said with a
sad smile. "But be careful, plan well, and you know that I'd help you in a
moment if you asked. I'll see you later."
