Draco was still shaken by the events of the morning. But he had told Snape
he would go to the grocery today, and he thought it best to get it over with.
Besides it got him out of the house, and he could swing by the library afterwards.
He walked down to grocery store, and took three jars of capers from the shelf
and set them down on the counter.
"Drake!" Lacy
beamed and took up the jars. "Capers? Is this all for today?"
She scanned both of them and laid them quickly in the bags, but she didn't want
to tell him the total just yet. Otherwise he'd just pay it and run off.
"Did Severus tell you I came by?" she asked, sounding almost too
familiar.
Draco narrowed his eyes
when she called him Drake. He was not sure why it irked him so, but he
was too frazzled to pretend it didn't. He just nodded when she asked if that
was all. Though he remembered that he had a much longer list at home he had
forgotten, which annoyingly enough meant he would have to make another trip in
the next day or so.
He started to rebuke her about coming by the house so much, when she brought
the topic up herself. Draco paused with his mouth hanging open Severus? He blinked. No, he had heard her
wrong...hadn't he? "I'm sorry. I'm a bit out of it. What did you
say?"
"My invitation... I
stopped by the other day. I wanted to know if your Uncle Severus told you. I'm
making dinner on Thursday. I'd love it if you could come, and of course Severus
too, and your grandfather as well... if he can make it."
Lacy looked at Drake now for the first time fully and frowned. Her voice took
on probably the most concerned tone she'd ever used with him. "Are you
okay? You look ill." she reached out involuntarily and felt his forehead.
No, no, she had
definitely said Severus...twice even. "Stop that," he said, knocking
her hand away. "He told me, but he...why are you calling him Severus? I
told you his name was Samuel."
Lacy blinked and jerked
her hand away, the small frown staying on her features. "Because he told
me to call him that..." Lacy explained, and sounded half indignant.
Draco gawked at her for a
second, before slamming his palms on the counter. "I'm going to kill him!
That bloody hypocrite! I'm going to kill him!" What on earth had possessed
Snape? Giving out his real name. What could have possibly distracted him that
badly?
Lacy's eyes widened, and
she jumped when Drake's palm slammed on the counter. A few of the customers in
the store, there were only about 3 other than him, stopped and gawked for a
moment.
"I'm going on break!" Lacy yelled across the store to the boy who was
shelving some items. She took some money from her own pocket and placed it in
the register to pay for the capers, grabbed up the bag, and headed around the
counter. She grabbed Drake's hand and hauled him bodily outside the store,
stopping when she came to the small benches just around the corner of the
building.
"You're scaring me..." Lacy admitted. "What's wrong? Did
something happen?" she was truly worried about him and hoped that her
sincerity was obvious.
Snape's gone mad, and
I think I may have just handed the Dark Lord back his horcrux. What a stupid
question. Draco
had really intended to yell at her a bit more, but he was feeling a bit off
kilter and decided it might be best to refocus first. "Let's go to the
pub. I want some milk," he said and started walking in that direction
before she had a chance to react.
She followed him
silently, still holding the bag of capers. Something was definitely up. But
Lacy was wondering whether she'd have to force it out of him or just hope he
was ready to share.
When they reached the pub, she walked up to the bar and ordered a pop for
herself and a chocolate milk for Drake.
Draco grabbed the drinks
as they appeared. "Booth," he said in a voice that was not
particularly loud but did not allow for argument. "And I'm paying!"
He told the curious barman.
Lacy shrugged at the
barman and followed Draco to a nearby booth. She slid in opposite of him and
sipped her pop, waiting for him to let her in on whatever it was that was
wrong. And even if he didn't, she supposed she'd give him the benefit of a
doubt before she prodded him.
Her mind raced furiously, but every guess seemed wrong. There was no way Drake
was jealous that she'd had tea with his uncle, or that she'd invited him to
dinner as well, was there?
Draco took a long sip of
his milk to steady himself, then put the glass down on the table. He laid his
hands open on the table in a half bargaining, half pleading position. He spoke
in a low voice, hoping the five other people in the room would not catch too
much of the conversation. "Okay, here are new rules. To start with you cannot
keeping paying for me. I'm rich-I don't
need charity, and stop buying me gifts. I really don't know what's going on in
your head, and I'm afraid to look. But I have a girlfriend. I don't need
or want another one, and even if I did you wouldn't be in the running. Second,
stop coming to the house. I don't what you're up to, but if you have any value
on your life or mine for that matter, you'll stop snooping. And thirdly, I
don't care what he told you to call him, his name is Samuel."
Lacy just sat there,
blinking. Everything he said just sounded crazy. Either his family had some
serious issues, or he did. And what was this about her valuing her life? And
why for that matter did he insist on 'Samuel.' Wasn't it up to his uncle
ultimately?
Lacy couldn't do much but frown. Her face still held the worried expression
though, now if not more so than before.
"Okay, you're really worrying me now, Drake." she said, but not
condescendingly. Her face took on a slightly aggravated slant. "And pardon
me for wanting to be your friend... You just looked like you could use
one."
Draco sighed. "Look,
this isn't about you. I understand that you're just trying to be...nice,"
he said diplomatically. "But you are making life very difficult for
me, right now."
"Is it your girlfriend?
Is she jealous and doesn’t want you seeing me? She going to 'kill' me if I do
or something?" It was the only reason she could think of. If so, the girl
sounded like a psycho.
What else could it be?
Draco let out a short
laugh. "You know, there's a good chance she would, but no, it's not my
girlfriend." Either of them...man, I'm an ass. Not that Ginny would
kill Lacey, hit her with a bat bogey maybe...actually that would kind of funny.
Pansy on the other hand...yup, there might just be murder involved. "I
don't want to see you, Lacy. I have to because I still have to buy
groceries."
"So I guess this
means you're not coming to dinner?" she asked, slumping slightly in the
booth.
"Oh, look you can
put two and two together," Draco said, smiling icily. He winced a little
internally, but it was for her own good. Anything to keep her away from that
house.
"You should know how
hard it is..." she retorted back. "You're blonde too." It was
the only thing she'd ever said to him so coldly. Instead of staying mad, Lacy
smoothed out her ego and dismissed it all entirely. She let her usual smile
creep back over her features and stood up, sliding the bag of capers across the
table to him.
"I hope you'll tell your uncle he's still welcome for dinner..." she
beamed pleasantly, not sounding the least bit peeved. "Thanks for the pop.
My break's only 15 minutes though."
And with that she was gone. He would come around. He'd HAVE to.
Draco watched her leave,
still feeling very confused. What did hair color have to do with anything? The
girl was quite clearly mad, but maybe he had convinced her to back off...maybe.
Draco took his time with his milk, listening to the barman whistle, while he
lost himself in thought. After he had drained his glass, he stood, grabbed his
bag of capers and made the long walk to Great Hangleton.
