Promise sighed deeply as
she stared out the window into the warm sunny morning. She was terribly bored
and she was also very homesick...well not exactly homesick but she missed her
horse terribly. It would have been a perfect day to go riding, not too hot, not
too cold, the sun shining. Yes, Promise missed her beautiful Eclipse very much
that day and wished that she could be there so badly...
"Wait!" She exclaimed, causing Charm, who was sleeping on her
shoulder to be so startled that she tumbled to the window sill.
The little winged cat
looked up at Promise with disdain. "meerf.." she muttered in what
sounded so much like a cat-like version of a curse word that it would have made
anyone turn around. Promise, however, knew PERFECTLY well what it meant and
raised her brows. "Watch your language, we're in a school."
Charm continued to look irritated but let loose no more kitty explitives,
opting to clean her paw instead. Promise stood and picked Charm up, setting her
friend on her shoulder again. "Come on, Charm, we have to visit Hagrid!
You miss Eclipse, don't you?"
Charm meeped noncommitally but her eyes lit up a little bit as Promise raced
through the castle, outside and across the castle grounds to Hagrid's home. She
knocked on his door a bit roughly in her eagerness, praying that he was home.
Hagrid opened the door and
smiled brightly, "Why if it isn't Miss Promise and Charm!"
Charm, who'd taken quite
the liking to the attention that the large man always gave her, lept from
Promise's shoulder into Hagrid's open hands happilly. "What can I do for
ya? Tea?"
"No thank you. I was wondering Hagrid, if you'd like to use a winged horse
for any of your lessons this year?"
Hagrid looked confused, "Well I guess it'd be nice, but I don't actually
have any winged horses..."
"No no, I mean...well *I* have a winged horse. And I miss her...and I was
wondering if you would mind if I brought her back...if you would stable her for
me. I'd let you use her for lessons and even come out to assist you. She
doesn't really listen to anyone but me....and it would really help me not be so
bored... PLEASE Hagrid?" Promise latched on to Hagrid's arm and gave him
her semi-lethal "kitten eyes."
Hagrid looked startled, "Well it's not really...something that's
done..."
"Has anyone ever asked?" Promise asked. "It's not like she
wouldn't be here for a purpose, thus you'd use her in your lessons. She's really
amazing with herding agressive creatures too...she's pretty agressive herself.
I'd be a teacher's aid and everything."
Hagrid looked taken aback but at the mention of agression his ears seemed to
prick. "Weeell, I suppose we could give 'er a try an' if there's any
trouble raised about her we can send 'er home."
Promise looked overjoyed and hugged Hagrid joyfully, "Thank you, Hagrid!
I'll be back soon!"
With that Promise was out the door and down the road toward Hogsmeade at a dead
run.
Promise had to sit down
upon reaching Hogsmeade for a few minutes for she hadn't slowed down the entire
way and was INCREDIBLY out of breath. The moment her heart had stopped racing
and her lungs felt less like they were going to explode. She
closed her eyes, activated a portkey, and then was jerked by her navel all the
way back to the US in an instant.
It felt wonderful to see her house again and she ran inside and up the stairs
for the sole purpose of leaping on her bed in a fit of glee and snuggling her
pillow saying, "Oh, how I've missed you pillow! You're coming back with
me..." She paused and looked down at the little stuffed armadillo on her
bed, "you too Oswald," she said and snatched him up. She shoved both
of them into a Wal-Mart bag then ran down to the kitchen to leave her absent
parents a note about Eclipse's disappearance. (Her parents were in South
America at a dig, archaeolgists.)
As joyfully as she'd done everything else in the past hour she ran out the back
door to the barn. "I suppose I should bring my tack just in case,"
she mumbled to no one in particular as she dragged her big western saddle out
of the tackroom and tossed it to the ground outside the door next to her
Wal-mart bag of bedding. She then went back in to get her bridle, halters,
leads, and saddle blanket. She also grabbed a few brushes to stuff into the Wal-mart
bag with her pillow and Oswald.
She then walked out and let out a piercing whistle and waited, looking at the
scenery. Their home was nestled in the towering and beautiful mountains in Montana.
It was black there since they were about 8 hours behind at her house but the
full moon was bright enough to see very clearly.
It was a couple minutes
before the thunder of hoofbeats rang through the night air and two large, black
horses came galloping up to her. She smiled and pet the one with the white
face, for he was far more demanding of attention.
She then picked up a lead and slung it around the pure black one's neck and
turned on the light inside the barn so she could see. She saddled and bridled
Eclipse then picked up the Wal-mart bag, turned off the light, and used the
foundation of the barn to help her reach the stirrup of the saddle for she
wasn't a very big person and the horse was enormous. She ducked under the
horse's wing which she'd been holding up so Promise could put the saddle on her
unobstructed. When Promise was on her back she put her wing back down and
waited for her orders. They never came, for Moments later she and Promise were
in Hogsmeade. Eclipse jumped, startled, spreading her feathers slightly and
snorting, her brilliant emerald eyes rolling slightly.
"Steady, you've done
that before." Promise said in a calming voice.
She let Eclipse settle down a bit then spurred her into a full gallop, and they
launched back toward Hogwarts.
When she reached Hagrid's hut again she untacked Eclipse who stood demurely to
let herself be unsaddled. Hagrid took her tack and stowed it away.
"She's a beauty!" Hagrid had said, staring with glee at the animal.
That she was also, she was huge standing 19 to 20 hands tall, pure jet black
with emerald colored eyes and long mane and a tail that was very slightly wavy
at the end.
Promise had promised Hagrid that he could ride her later if he wanted and that
if she acted up carry a stick with him and threaten to swat her, it usually
made her act polite.
She then hopped barefoot on to Eclipse's bare back, using Hagrid's front step
to launch herself from onto the huge animal's back.
"Don't forget to not let any Muggles see her wings if you ride far,"
Hagrid cautioned.
Promise smiled and pulled her wand from her back pocket, "Evanesco
Alatus" she swished her wand and Eclipse's wings were gone. Eclipse didn't
look preturbed, she was used to such treatment. "Desino Veneficium,"
She commanded and Eclipse's wings reappeared.
Hagrid smiled and Promise spurred Eclipse forward. The Mare lunged forward at a
breakneck pace and galloped full speed until she reached the lake at which
point she launched herself into the air and flew, Promise gleaming with glee
and Charm trying to keep up.
