Draco spent a little more attention on his appearance than he had been lately. He trimmed his hair so that it looked neat and even...not too short, but not shaggy. He had toyed with the idea of letting his hair grow out like his father's, but not every man could pull off long hair. Draco was worried he would come off looking like a girl and not a pretty one. He studied his own reflection for a bit. He had dressed in black. He didn't have any true dress clothes, but these were neat and fit him well.
He whistled as he went down to breakfast. He felt
irrationally happy. He scrambled his own eggs and started humming the same tune
that had made him cry the other day in the grocery. He would need to go again
before too long. The pantry was getting low.
But not today...he was feeling too happy today to subject
himself to awkward moments with Lacy. He killed most of the morning reading
through his (now rather overdue) library books, and much of his afternoon, was
spent in the garden shed playing with some of the simple chemistry experiments
one of the books had suggested. This added a whole new dimension to his potion
making, and his mind was already buzzing with possibilities.
Professor Snape's summons arrived while Draco was finishing up a rather fizzy little experiment with baking soda (he would have to add a fresh box to his grocery list). After dinner, he skipped down to Snape's chambers and knocked. He tried to look serious but could not completely kill the little smile playing on his lips.
Snape took off the wards and glanced at the clocks. He was a
few moments late, but it was still reasonable.
"Draco." Snape gestured for him to come in, and shut the door behind him, putting up his most powerful wards. "Take a seat..." after they'd both taken chairs facing each other Snape just let it out "Have you thought any more about what you'd mentioned a few days ago?" he asked calmly.
Draco actually had to think to remember what they had talked about. It seemed so distant through the golden haze he was experiencing.
"A bit," he said, trying to sound serious and fight down the stupid, inappropriate grin that was still tugged at the corner of his mouth.
"And?" He wanted the answer from the boy before he decided if he'd be putting his life on the line. He'd spent many years as a spy and that taught him to be anything but careless.
The grin finally stopped tugging. Draco studied Snape, trying to figure out what he was getting at.
"Potter's missing," he said. It probably was not the course of conversation that Snape had intended to take, but Draco thought it might be equally fruitful. "Vanished in the middle of the night with older Weasley's. Have you heard anything?"
"I was unaware." Snape drawled. Uninterested. "Where do you think he went?"
"Haven't the foggiest," Draco said, wondering if Snape was really as unconcerned as he looked. Bloody boy Potter, the blazing chosen one, had gone missing. Draco had thought Snape would at least be curious. "Fenrir's been off for the past week or so too."
"Fenrir has always been absent minded of our nature. He's only ever been in it for the killing." Snape replied, just as monotone. Course...that was his specialty.
"Suit me just fine if he stayed away for the rest of
the summer," Draco said with a shrug. "Been getting a bit crowded around
here anyway."
Inspiration struck, and Draco lifted his eyebrows inquiringly. "Have you thought over what we talked about? About me being a double agent?"
"You're extremely thick-skulled Draco. Why do you think I asked you to meet me again?" Snape paused. He didn't want to voice his opinion before hearing Draco's decision. "What have you decided on?" he had obviously decided to ignore Draco's question.
"I told you last time. I want to do it. I think it's worth the risk. I want to be a double agent." Draco scowled.
Snape paused. At least that decision was out of the way.
"For who?" he asked calmly, not meeting Draco's eyes.
Draco looked at Snape curiously. It was not like Snape to avoid his eyes, usually it was the other way around. For who? It almost didn't matter, but then again, maybe it mattered very much. "You," Draco said. "I'll work for you."
That was a rather unusual reply. Especially for Draco. Snape had been expecting "For the Dark Lord of course.", but that wasn't what he said. Now he was on very dangerous territory. He lifted his eyes. Draco looked very serious. Which was good... this was no joke. "I haven’t always been faithful to the Dark Lord, Draco... are you sure you want to work for me?"
"Voldemort was ready to kill me, and my family. Potter doesn't give a damn about me either way. I'd be dead if it wasn't for you," Draco said. "I may be thick, but I'm not an idiot. You're the only one who cares whether I live or die, and you know the game better than anyone. You lost your link to the Order over me. Use me to get it back. I owe you that."
Snape debated his extremely mature answer. It showed the boy was ready if anything.
"You'll have to train hard Draco... it's not easy. I'll need to get your occlumency skills up as well. That's a very mature answer you gave..." that was probably as close to a compliment as Snape would get. Draco's small smile returned.
You haven't been able to read my mind in ages, have you? thought Draco behind his mental walls. Still, he was not about to turn his nose up at Snape's offer. No, he definitely needed Snape on his side. "I'm interested in learning legilmency as well. I had asked Aunt Bella to teach me, but if you're willing..."
"Why would you even go to Bella first?” Snape scoffed. “Of course I'd teach you Legilimency. We'll start lessons next week."
And just like that the meeting was over.
