Bellatrix sat on the couch in the main hall, reading over an old muggle book she had found in the library. It was old and dusty, but the title intrigued her. The title Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen barely showed though the crumbing binding. Raising her head from the book, she looked around at her surroundings. It was better than Azkaban, but she would prefer her own room in the Black Family Manor.
Fenrir sat by the fire, cross-legged, eating what looked like a small lamb. Rodolphus was in a corner, hexing small spiders and insects. Returning to her book, from the corner of her eye, she saw Lucius rush into the room; this didn’t seem to hold any interest to her.
The old clock on the mantle struck seven pm, and suddenly there was a loud Crack and Narcissa Malfoy stood in the centre of the hall, looking calm, collected, and slightly bothered.
“I'd rather be back at home, but this will do...” Narcissa thought as she opened her eyes and began looking around at her surroundings. She set down her suitcase, and saw Lucius. Something inside of her sparked and she practically ran to him and gave him a hug and a kiss.
“Lucius...I'm so glad that you're okay," Narcissa said, toying with his hair. Lucius couldn't help but be suddenly overwhelmed by his wife's arrival and subsequent barrage of physical affection. Despite his love for Narcissa, this kind of public show of intimacy had always bothered him, especially in the presence of other Death Eaters. He stepped back from Narcissa’s embrace, retaining one hand upon the small of her back.
“Bella, how are you?” Narcissa said when she pulled her eyes away from her husband and began to glance around the room again. “You look rather bored. Where's Draco?" She asked, looking from side to side.
“He should be meeting me for dinner this evening. I'm sure he is eager to see you, again." Lucius said answering for Bellatrix.
Meanwhile, Draco was stirred from his bed by the sound of someone apparating. He noticed it had begun to grow dark and checked his watch.
"Right, dinner," he murmured. He got dress as neatly and wizardly as he could, and headed downstairs.
Snape apparated back from the
kitchen and passed Lucius and Narcissa in the hall. He gave each a curt nod of
acknowledgement and then paused a few feet away.
"Narcissa," Snap said
flatly, as she acknowledged him by giving him a nod.
"Will you be joining us here in the Dark Lords manor?" he asked
bluntly, forgetting all formalities.
After a brief glance at Lucius, Narcissa gave another nod and a tight lipped
smile. He knew this house was nothing compared to the Malfoy glamour, but
they'd have to lower their quality of living if they expected to live through
the war without capture.
Lucius scowled looking at the group of Death Eaters which were now gathered in what was ostensibly the lounge. He really did want to have a private dinner with his family, but with the group around he knew that would be difficult. He sighed, rather vocally, and actually ran a finger through his loose hair. He'd always hated dealing with social situations of this kind. There was a creak behind him and he turned just as Draco entered from the stairwell.
"Mother!" Draco exclaimed with genuine delight and ran to embrace Narcissa.
Feeling slightly left out Bellatrix got up off of the couch to great her sister. It seemed like the entire population of the Riddle House, with the exception of the Dark Lord naturally, had welcomed Narcissa with open arms. She embraced her sister and smiled meekly.
“Oh Narcissa, for once you listened to my advice!” Both sisters giggled and Bellatrix let Lucius and Draco continue talking to her.
"Are you here?--I mean are you staying here?" Draco asked in a rush. "Is this just for dinner or is it...and what about the manor?"
"Your mother will be staying here with us for sometime. At least until the Ministry gets tired of searching our house for us." Lucius nearly shuddered at the idea of all those blood traitor hands searching his things.
He would just have to keep reminding himself of what he'd said to Narcissa. He couldn't help but hope that any of the mudbloods that dared attempt to enter the house would be slapped into place by any number of the charms he and past generations had cast upon the house.
When Bellatrix heard the words "At least until the Ministry gets tired
of searching our house for us.". She had to smirk.
"Lucius, the Ministry has been going through my place, but I still have all my good objects in my chamber. Just go down the forth hall into the disguises room and then apparate to your house and take whatever you want." She gave a look to Narcissa and Draco to let them know she was talking to them too.
Lucius scowled as Bella came
unnecessarily close and spoke this advice in his ear, but one glance at
Narcissa made his countenance lighten. This was her sister after all, and
Lucius consciously pushed the scowl away, if only for her sake.
"Don't worry, Bellatrix, they won't find anything incriminating, even if they do know what they're looking for." He looked back to his wife and son and allowed a small smile to creep across his lips. "But I have ensured that we can return as soon as they've tired with the place." He paused and then changed the subjects, pointedly only addressing his wife and son. "I've had the house elves make something up, shall we go into dinner?"
Snape tried to forget that he'd been cast off to the side from their little family reunion. He backed off as sneakily as possible and quickly walked back to his dungeons to do what he did every night, toil over ways he could help the Dark Lord take over.
"House Elves?” Draco murmured, not really meeting his father's eyes. He took his mother's hand heading for the dining room. Bella watched as Lucius, Narcissa and Draco headed off for the Dining Room. Fenrir began to make ripping sounds and Bella walked off to explore the manor yet again.
The three Malfoys, abandoning the
remaining Death Eaters for the dining room, took their seats before what many
would consider to be a feast. Despite the near mound of food, Lucius glowered
at the young house elf that appeared to serve them and felt a small thrill as the
creature cowered before getting on with its job.
"Draco," Lucius glower disappeared as he looked at his son. "I want to hear all about what you've been doing here. And all about your last year in Hogwarts."
Haltingly at first and then with
greater energy Draco told his father of his plan for getting Death Eaters into
Hogwarts, his difficulties in repairing the vanishing cabinet, the elaborate
means he had gone to keep his work secret, how Crabbe and Goyle had loyally
endured spending hours as little girls. How he had outwitted Slughorn...and
admitting this wasn't much of an accomplishment.
Draco paused in his story, answering questions, delaying the moment he had to relive the eventful night when his plans had come to fruition.
"Professor Snape actually
finished him off," he admitted looking at his plate, anywhere but his
father's eyes. "But I did disarm him first." He said nothing about
Dumbledore's words to him. There was no real reason to repeat them. He said
nothing about how he now knew there had been a witness...after all he still
wasn't sure who.
"And since then, I've been assisting Snape mostly. Took a bit to get settled in, but, I've got some new assignments now. It's gotten really busy."
Lucius listened to his son's
account of his past year with pleasure, finally hearing about what he had spent
so much time in Azkaban thinking about. He had even tried to bribe a couple of
the Aurors in an attempt to hear anything about what Draco had been up to. He
felt the frown drop from his mind to his lips when Draco mentioned his failure
to kill Dumbledore, but didn't say anything for the moment. He would demand
more details of the situation from Snape before reprimanding his son, if
necessary, and even if it were required, he certainly didn't want to do so with
Narcissa around. As good of a mother as she was she did have a certain penchant
for giving into the boy when what he really needed was a firm hand.
They finished dinner rather quickly, each reminiscing and re-acquainting themselves with the family which had been fractured for so long. After dinner they each went their separate ways, Lucius and Narcissa unpacking and spreading their things through the small area which had been given to them. Finally, Lucius went to bed tired and despite the unpleasant film of dirt which he seemed to be unable to remove from his skin, he was happy to be back.
